Chapter Thirteen
I crashed through the bushes, my breath steaming in front of me. âGot to get to Cuzak,â I thought to myself. Iâve got to get to Brayden, got to warn him. Icy twigs tore at my parka and clawed at my face. My foot caught on a half-buried tree branch, sending me sprawling to the ground. I landed on my hands and knees. I looked up at the sky, at the full moon. I could feel the panic and adrenaline coursing through my body. How long did I have? How much time?
Iâd slipped out of the meeting after claiming that I wasnât feeling well and needed to go back to my dorm to process all of this. I wasnât sure how much time I had left, though. I pushed myself to my feet and kept running, dodging trees. After only a few minutes, I burst through a patch of bushes, skidding on the outcrop of gravel at the shoulder of route thirteen. Again, I ended up on my hands and knees, the ice-encrusted gravel biting into my unprotected palms. I shoved myself to my feet and started sprinting again, only vaguely aware of the cuts on my hands.
My breathing was ragged by the time I got to the corner of Cuzak Street. I stopped next to the street sign, placing my hands on my knees and trying to slow my breathing. At the sound of a wolfâs howl, my blood turned to ice. It wasnât Braydenâs howl. I knew that for a fact. The moon didnât control him. Nothing did. It had to be Dean. The fact that the howl was far off in the distance was no comfort to me.
As soon as it died out, leaving nothing but silence, I took off down the road, running as fast as I could, not stopping until I reached Braydenâs house. My bangs fell in front of my eyes as I skidded to a stop, accidentally banging my left hip against the back bumper of Braydenâs SUV. I shook the obstruction from my face, padded up to the porch, and banged on the door.
âBrayden, itâs me, Anika!â I breathed, knowing he wouldnât have any trouble hearing me. Even if his hearing wasnât so sensitive, even if he was completely human, he wouldâve heard my pounding. âOpen up!â
The lock clicked open and Brayden was standing in front of me.
âAnika?â He questioned. âWhat are you doing here?â
âThey know your name!â I blurted out.
A look of suspicion glazed his eyes. âWhat are you talking about?â
âThe Hunters. They know what you are.â
His lips curled back in a silent snarl. âWhat did you do? You were the only one who knew for sure!â
âI didnât sell you out. Look, Katelyn approached me a few days ago and asked me to join an organization that sheâs a part of.â
âWhat?â His suspicious look turned to one of annoyance. âKatelyn from work?â
âI kind of told her that Iâd join them.â
In an instant, Braydenâs whole face changed, modifying into something more primal.
